White Tiger (Asian Four Gods), single channel video by Naoko Tosa
The White Tiger is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. It is sometimes called the White Tiger of the West (西方白虎, Xī Fāng Bái Hǔ), and is known as Bái Hǔ in Chinese, Byakko in Japanese, Baekho in Korean and Bạch Hổ in Vietnamese. It represents the west and the autumn season. I used Japanese lacquer, Urushi, which is also called “Japan” as the basic liquid material, gave sound vibrations to the lacquer, and shot the created form by a high-speed camera with 2000 frames/sec. The created video art well expresses the noble and at the same time wild movement of the White Tiger.
